EYE SPY INTELLIGENCE MAGAZINE 73 2011
From the Editor:
Ten years ago Eye Spy reported on a secret British Intelligence
signal to the US that warned Osama bin-Laden’s terror outfit -
al-Qaida, was on the verge of
carrying out a major attack in a Western city. MI5 did not know
where, or when, or even how it would be performed. Yet the
intelligence world was shaken by events in September 2001,
especially the CIA. Some 3,000 people suffered a cruel fate, but the
Agency vowed it would bring those responsible to book - especially
bin-Laden. And so it was that in the early hours of 1 May that a
joint US Navy-CIA operation in northern Pakistan resulted in the
death of the world’s most notorious terrorist. Few will shed a tear
for bin-Laden, but the news stories regarding his demise will rumble
on for years to come. So too, I suspect, why his presence in
Pakistan remained a closely guarded secret. It seems inconceivable
that officials there didn’t know he was living just yards from the
country’s most prestigious military academy. The truth will out, I’m
sure.
When an MI6-SAS team was rumbled in the Libyan desert - many
commentators felt aghast that such an elite unit could have been
captured by farm hands and a few security men. “Shocking failure”...
“bungling MI6” are two phrases which appeared in newspapers; but the
fact is the operation showed just how far the intelligence Service
was prepared to go in an effort to - first create a proper
communication channel with the rebels - and then do what MI6 has
always done
better than anyone else: obtain first-hand HUMINT (human
intelligence) from high quality and multiple sources.
