FROM THE EDITOR - MARK BIRDSALL
AFRICA AN ARC OF INSTABILITY
Welcome to this brief
overview of Eye Spy Intelligence Magazine - issue 83.
Several international armed forces are currently engaged in an
unconventional war with groups claiming allegiance to
al-Qaida. In Somalia and
Mali French Special Forces are fighting large terrorist
outfits which are both organised and well armed. Sadly in
Mali, a captive secret service officer
in the person of Denis Allex was executed - this as French
troops launched an unsuccessful raid to free him. Spearheading
the battle against al-Qaida in many countries in north Africa
is AFRICOM. This is but one of nine US Unified Combatant
Commands supported by many Special Forces elements’ including
US
Navy SEALS and Delta Force troops. They are tackling al-Qaida
groups from the west coast all the way across the Sahara to
the Horn of Africa. Supportive of these efforts, many African
armed forces are working with the Command to remove the
terrorists. And of course, several intelligence services are
operational in the region, including MI6 and the CIA. A number
of highly secret programmes such as Creek Sand, Tusker Sand
and Aztec Archer are examined in this authoritative feature
prepared by our editors and based on information from first
class sources. Many of the al-Qaida groups in north Africa
previously operated within national borders, but there is now
an effort to
unite the franchises. If this happens then more governments
like that in Mali will probably topple.
In this edition of Eye Spy, we have a special feature on this most important theatre, and endeavour to explain why the region has become a magnet for those wishing to join al-Qaida. As for AFRICOM, it is now fighting a secret and bloody war which should it lose, will have repercussions for everyone.
Besides several fascinating and absorbing features in this
edition, we also take an indepth look at spy cases involving
submariners. ‘Secret Silent Service’ explains why intelligence
services regard submarine-related intelligence as vital. Any
loss of technical information or systems technology could
jeopardise boats and would undoubtedly affect national
security.
A Happy New Year to all our readers.
