THE SPYCRAFT MANUAL The Insiders Guide to Espionage Techniques
By Barry Davies Carlton Books Foreword by Richard Tomlinson
From the seven basic drills of agent contact to satellite surveillance, The Spycraft Manual is a unique book. A fascinating work of reference to the modern world of espionage.
The Spycraft Manual is all about today's spies, their tradecraft and skills. Drawing on the real world of espionage, it explains how and why spies carry out their missions. Each subject is covered in fascinating detail and illustrated with photographs and specially commissioned artworks.
The real, modern-day spy is far removed from the popular images that we see on cinema screens and read about in novels. Gone are the classic intelligence agents of the past - the dinner jacket has been replaced by a bullet-proof vest worn beneath shabby clothes. Hi-tech modern spies must blend in, live among the enemy, speak their language, befriend and exploit at every opportunity. They are required to be streetwise, tough and deadly.
This is the first book to reveal many secret "tradecraft" techniques used by covert operators around the world. Never before has such in-depth information about agents' skills and their application been so readily available to readers.
Chapters include:
SPIES AND AGENT DEVELOPMENT: intelligence agencies, recruitment, contact, handling SECRET CODES: cryptology, spot code, computer encryption SURVEILLANCE: terminology, communications, garbology, static, foot and vehicle surveillance, satellite, observation, bugging, video, audio, photography METHODS OF ENTRY: covert entry, lock picking, demolition and explosives INFILTRATION: air, sea and land, HAHO and HALO CLANDESTINE OPERATIONS: Alpha, Delta, the Increment, executive action, disposal, sniper, propaganda, forgery, passports, ID cards, money SABOTAGE: specialist missions, booby traps, ambush, bio-terrorism HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING: awareness, self defence, torture, escape and evasion, weapons SELF-PRESERVATION: security in the home and on the road
Barry Davies was a member of the SAS for 18 years. He was heavily involved in the Mogadishu Hijack and it was for his work on that event that he received the British Empire Medal. Since leaving the army he has worked as a consultant for military, security and terrorist issues. He runs Spy School Spain, where members of the public can learn tradecraft and combat techniques. He is a frequent consultant for army programmes and he has written many books about the SAS, and other aspects of the military and terrorism.
'A truly fascinating work that covers numerous aspects of espionage techniques. Davies has drawn upon some excellent intelligence books to deliver a very good overview of today's modern spy. A must for every enthusiast and professional alike. Controversial.' Mark Ian Birdsall, editor.
